Horizontal and vertical radiators are usually found in hot water central heating systems. Apart from this there are many other types of heating systems. Warm air heating systems are common in some places. Electric heating systems are also frequently found.

The choice of which system is based on a number of factors. One is cost – cost of installation and cost of running. Second to the questions of cost, come aesthetic considerations.

Which is chosen often depends on the area. In warn locations where the need is minimal, installation costs often outweigh running costs. Another reasonably inconspicuous system is “warm air”. Like “under floor” it is not easy to retrofit. It operates by warm air being heated by a boiler. This air is then fed by fans around the building via ducting in walls and floors. The air is allowed into the individual room through grills in the walls.

A very common form of central heating is hot water radiators. This is where water is heated by a boiler and pumped via narrow pipes throughout the house. While this is less expensive to retrofit than most other, the downside is that the radiators tend to be big and conspicuous. This is because they need to have a relatively large surface area to be able to release sufficient heat into the room.

Radiator hot water heating is economic to install and to run. Even to retrofit it is not too expensive as the narrow pipes can be fed relatively easily under floorboards and through walls.

If someone doesn’t like the look of standard horizontal radiators, there are many other choices. One of the most attractive in appearance is the vertical type. Some very stylish designs exist for vertical radiators. They come in chrome, multiple flat panel single flat panel, mirror, column, colored and tubular among other styles.

As well as the choice of styles, their use of course allows great versatility of positioning. Any narrow wall space can be used. They can be perfect when positioned, for example, beside a door or beside windows. The can also be used in narrow alcoves. Indeed in most places where a normal horizontal unit would be out of the question.

It is difficult to understand why there should be such a wide variety of styles and colors in vertical radiators. Originally some people regarded them as awkward or ugly. That may be the reason many manufacturers put a big effort into making them aesthetically pleasing. They tend now to be intentionally chosen by customers because of their appearance and even installed as a special feature in a room
