How Cold Should I Keep My Home?

When you are trying to conserve energy or gas, you might be tempted to keep your temperature very cold or very hot. How cold is too cold? How hot is too hot? Remember that safety is at stake when deciding on the temperature of your home.

During the summertime keeping your house too cold is not the issue. Your Utah air conditioning system can be turned on whenever you need it. A thermostat helps you decide when you need to use your Utah air conditioning unit.

When conserving energy, only use your Utah air conditioning system when you need it. But remember that too much heat is not safe for anyone. If your alternative cooling methods are not working don’t hesitate to turn on your AC. Heat stroke can be very harmful, so never let the temperature get too high in your house.

The winter is a little harder to determine. You may want to save money and not turn on your heater, but at the same time you don’t want to risk the temperature in your home dropping too much. Too low a temperature and your pipes will freeze and expand.

Busted pipes cause a lot of water damage. Water damage is one of the very most destructive methods of ruining your home. It is much safer for you, and your family, to not let the temperature get so low that your pipes freeze.

I would recommend keeping your home at around 55 degrees. This is the lowest I would keep it. Why this temperature, if you won’t technically have to deal with frozen pipes until it is around 32 degrees? My reasoning is because if your power does go out, then there will be less of a chance of your pipes quickly getting frozen. The higher the temperature of your home, the less risk involved.

Another reason to keep it warmer at 55 degrees is because you want to keep your family healthy. You don’t want to worry about hypothermia or other issues. Remember to factor in your family, pets, and even house plants when determining the temperature of your home.

Remember to have a quick source of heat in case of emergencies. HVAC systems or a wood fireplace can heat people up quickly, especially if it gets too cold. Be sure to remember to factor in your house plants too when deciding on the temperature of your home, as some plants do not do well in very cold temperatures.
