Decorating Your New Deck

Once you’ve built a new deck or patio, you will need to furnish it, accessorize it and make it comfortable for yourself and guests. A deck is an extension of your home, linking outdoors with the indoors, and as such, should reflect the decor and style of the house.

Depending on its purpose there are many different ways and styles to furnish a deck. You can choose loungers, sofas or some cozy bean bags if you want to turn it into a place where you can relax and unwind. If on the other hand you want a place where you can entertain guests, then chairs and a large table are probably the best idea for furniture. You may want to consider a small bar area too. Should space be a problem, you can transform the railing into a bar by turning their top into a countertop and placing some bar stools in front of it. This is also great for parties that need dance floor space.

When choosing furniture, your first consideration will be weather resistance. Even if you have a roof or awning, sun, wind and rain will get in at some stage. Wood looks great, but requires regular maintenance to keep it weatherproof. A good alternative to wood furniture is the one made of aluminum or the newer composite materials that resemble wood but can guarantee a higher weather resistance. Upholstery should be kept outside as little as possible. Therefore, you should consider cushions that can be removed when the weather turns bad and that have washable covers.

If you want to smoothly connect your high deck to your garden, some potted plants can do the trick. Plants that shed leaves are not a good idea, unless you like spending most of your time sweeping the deck and your garden. In order to avoid staining your patio, try not to flood the pots when you’re watering the plants and don’t use cracked drip trays.

If you are buying a barbecue for the deck or patio, consider a gas version. Otherwise you can be sure to have a smudged deck floor, should you drop any barbecue coals or wood. If you want to have a built-in barbecue, you need to keep an eye on the airflow to ensure continuous burning.

You can also add outdoor heaters and choose the size that better fits your deck. Not only are they perfect for patio-use during colder days but they hardly occupy any space at all. If you want to enjoy the sun in wintertime but keep out of rain or too much heat, you can opt for a retractable patio cover.

Garden ornaments, vases, wall hangings and other decor can be added to make your deck comfortable and attractive to your tastes. Regardless of how you choose to decorate it, your deck should provide you with a perfect setting for relaxation and enjoyment.
